“I am an art teacher at Central Alternative High School in Dubuque, Iowa. We are an Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound family. I rely on the local community’s working artists and art events to serve as learning resources, working with the community as a natural extension of the classroom, providing opportunities for students to apply their learning and to experience art in a real world context. This is why I Art Scene is a necessary resource in my classroom.
I picked up a copy of Art Scene at the Dubuque Museum of Art and quickly realized that I needed to have a subscription for my art classroom. The word “dedicated” in the caption just below Art Scene’s namesake hooked me upon first glance “Iowa’s only publication dedicated to the arts & culture.” Wow.
I want students to expand their definitions of what art is, what its role can be, where art is found, who creates it, who its audience is, what its purpose is, how art thrives, why it thrives, and why art is inevitably and intricately woven into their lives. Art Scene makes art and cultural studies come alive by highlighting working artists today. Art Scene makes art out to be a lifestyle, as a viable and enriching way to shape existence. Art Scene shows students that art is alive and well locally; art is pulsing, headstrong, right here in Iowa. This application to the here and now helps students become engaged in learning, in the arts, in exploring culture!
As a teacher, I need my students to be exposed to a broad sphere of art, to see how far-reaching it is. Art Scene provides a comprehensive and integrated look at all kinds of the arts and culture, from two-dimensional visual art to music and dance, while offering insight into important current issues and debates. Furthermore, with the increasing need for reading and writing to be infused into each and every discipline in school, Art Scene’s beautiful design, contemporary relevance, regional focus, cultural celebration, and scintillating articles invite students to participate in reading and critical thinking. The reflective and synthesizing process of journaling, and journalism, can also be fostered by the text and images found in Art Scene.
Most importantly, my hope is for students to feel that a life in making art, that a life of living the arts, is possible. Art Scene shows all of us that indeed, this is a reality for all of us. Thank you.”
Kristina M. Castaneda - Art Teacher, Central Alternative High School, Dubuque, Iowa
“Art Scene is an important part of the Hancher Auditorium marketing mix. With a statewide audience and a focus on all the arts and culture events that make this state a great place to live, it's a natural fit for us.
Art Scene is a key voice for the vibrant arts and culture community that Hancher is so proud to be a part of.”
Rob Cline - Marketing Director, Hancher Auditorium, Iowa City
“Art Scene has been the best outlet for my gallery. We’ve had people come from
all over the state to check out our fine art from seeing our ads in Art Scene. I’ve been impressed with their organization, quality and staff that’s been wonderful to work with. Thanks for making our gallery a success.”
Terri Roberts - Owner, Terri’s Frame and Art featuring Iowa Artists, Urbandale
“Art Scene’s statewide reach offers a unique opportunity why wouldn’t an arts venue take that offer? When I picked up my first copy of Art Scene last season I found myself wishing I had more room in my ad budget! Needless to say, I was sure to reserve space in my ad budget this season. Plus, the non-profit ad rates allow us to run an ad every month during our season.
The Old Creamery is seeing people come through our doors who haven’t been here before, and they let the box office know they’re here because they saw us in Art Scene. I call that ad money well spent!”
Lori Johnson - Promotions Director, Old Creamery Theatre Company, Amana
“Our gallery represents 30 artists state wide. Art Scene's state wide distribution is a perfect way to reach our artist's fans around the state. We began advertising in Art Scene the first month it came out to be supportive of the publication and local arts. Since that time, we have seen an increase in traffic and we notice people walking in the door for the first time carrying an Art Scene. Art Scene is a quality publication, ran by a professional staff of dedicated art enthusiasts. When we put together our first marketing campaign, Iowa's only publication dedicated to the arts was an obvious choice.”
TJ & Jackie Moberg Owners, Moberg Art Gallery, Des Moines
“It’s easy for us to reach our local fans, they already know who we are. What we are always searching for is ways to reach new audiences, specifically people from throughout Iowa and the Midwest.
With Art Scene it was an easy decision because this audience already gets it. The readers have an appreciation for the arts, however we suspected they hadn’t heard of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center before.
And, what a great publication… it’s well-written, the staff are professional, easy to work with and the rates very reasonable considering the reach the paper has. Plus, Art Scene’s Culture Flash e-newsletter is an added bonus.
We consider Art Scene a staple in our advertising plans.”
Janelle Darst - Marketing Director, Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center,
University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls
“It's quite simple. Art Scene is the only ‘all arts’ publication available in the Midwest. As one who has lived in and visited larger and smaller communities, I have not found a publication more dedicated to the Arts.
Sure, you can find national publications that are geared for the ‘How To’
or news from galleries from the east and west coast, but we have a gem that is dedicated to Iowa's way of expression Iowa's way of feeling and understanding art. And in many ways,
Art Scene reminds us that we are more sophisticated than we think. It allows us to
know that ‘we are not alone’ in this craving for creativeness.
The Art Scene reader is dedicated to the arts. And Art Scene’s reader is our customer. Not just artists but people who know and live ‘the arts.’ We are proud to support a publication that supports our clients.
Sales have increased due to the branding we have done in Art Scene. Period.”
