Submission Deadline: June 30, 2009

Art Scene is accepting entries for our second annual “Snap Decisions” photo contest. This is an open competition; no distinction will be made between professional and amateur photographers.

The top three photos in each category will appear in print in our August issue. There will be a $100 prize given to the top photo in each of the five categories, and gift certificates to The Art Store in Des Moines (www.shoptheartstore.com) will be awarded to the two runners-up in each category.

Entries must be submitted via email by 5 p.m., June 30, 2008. Only one entry per photographer is allowed in each category. Submit to roderick @ artsceneiowa.com.

The categories are:

1. DEADLINE NEWS:
A news photo or series of photos that shows a breaking news event, such as (but not only) crime, accidents, fires, arrests.

2. SCENIC: Landscape scenery which may or may not include people or animals as a secondary emphasis.

3. WILDLIFE: Photos that have as their principal subject one or more animal, plants or insects.

4. ARTISTIC: A photo that shows the creative side of the photographer, with any subject. (NOTE: Photos may be manipulated with a computer in this category ONLY.)

5. PEOPLE: A photo that has as its principal emphasis one or more persons, including individual portraits.

BASIC RULES: The photo must be taken by the person who submits it, and he or she agrees that photos submitted may be published in Art Scene LLC, and on our Web site without compensation. As a condition of submission, the contestant affirms that he or she owns full rights to the photo.

As a condition of submission, the contestant affirms that he or she owns full rights to the photo and that the photo has never before been published in any professional medium.

CONTESTANTS WILL RETAIN FULL RIGHTS TO THE IMAGE AFTER THE CONTEST.

Judges reserve the right to place the photo in another category during the selection process.
Employees, shareholders or interns with Art Scene or associated corporations may not enter the contest.

The management of Art Scene and judges are the final authority on contest rules and submissions. Certain rules may be adjusted to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.
However, the deadline for submission is absolute.

Photographers must provide name, phone number, address and where the photo was taken for the entry to be eligible. Art Scene must be able to contact the winning photographers the week of July 10.

TECHNICALITIES: The photos must be sent digitally via an email attachment to roderick@artsceneiowa.com, and the subject line must specify “photo contest.” Within the body of the email, the contestant must specify for which category the photo is being submitted. The email message must clearly state in English the full name and current location of the photographer, the circumstances surrounding the taking of the photo and the date and place the photo was taken.

The photographer should provide a cutline stating what the photo shows and such other information as the photographer deems necessary to fully understand the photo. The written material should name individuals who appear and are identifiable in any photo. By making the submission, the photographer is vouching for the truthfulness of the written material.

The photo should be no more than six inches in width or height and contain no more than 250 and no less than 150 pixels per inch of density (dpi).

The photo should be in JPEG/JPG format and sent as an attachment with the file name as the number of the category in which it is being submitted, followed by the name of the photographer.

For example: the file name of a photo in the “Artistic” category taken by Mr. Jones would be 4jones.jpg.

What to do if you only have prints: Take your photos to any Kinkos, Walgreens or Wal-Mart. They will help you burn a CD of all your prints (a standard CD will hold upwards of 200 images) for around $5. To ensure a quality reproduction, save files as a jpeg at 300 dpi.
